DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik, Republic of Croatia, is the most beautiful stone jewel of the Mediterranean. Each year thousands of people from all over the world come to see this town so as to rest from ordinariness and breathe in a piece of tempting beauty. In the 12th century it became a free township and thanks to diplomacy and trade soon grew into a little state which unfolded its whole splendor. The town has an old library, an unusually rich archives, an art gallery, several museums and an aquarium. It is encircled by walls with three huge fortresses, five bulwarks and fourteen rectangular towers. Walking on the walls you gain a wonderful view of the town and the environs. Dubrovnik is rich in exceptional and valuable monuments such as the fortresses of Revelin (16th c.) and Lovrijenac, the Sponza Palace, and others. The most beautiful old town building certainly is the Rector's Palace. Off the Dubrovnik shores lies a little island called Lokrum with a Benedictine monastery dating from 11th century, today a national park and a favored bathing spot. Several well-known resorts lie to the east of the town, such as follows: Kupari, Mlini, Srebreno, Plat, Cavtat, and others.

Dubrovnik is easily accessible by plane, bus, boat and car. Dubrovnik airport is 10 km north of the city's center with regular connections to Zagreb, Ljubljana, Vienna, Trieste, Milan.
