Zavod za histologiju i embriologiju djeluje od 1958. godine od kada datira i kontinuirana organizacija nastave iz histologije i embriologije za studente medicine, stomatologije, kao i studente drugih profila koji se obrazuju na Medicinskom fakultetu. Pored nastave iz histologije i embriologije, članovi katedre vode i organiziraju nastavu na brojnim drugim kolegijima u sklopu dodiplomskih i doktorskih  studija koji se provode na Fakultetu i Sveučilištu. Znanstveno-istraživački rad organiziran je u nekoliko grupa koje rade u području eksperimentalne patologije i imunologije, molekularne biologije i virusologije. Među najvažnija znanstvena dostignuća članova Zavoda ubrajaju se radovi u kojima su karakterizirani imunološki mehanizmi nadzora virusnih infekcija, virusni imuno subverzivni geni, ali i radovi iz područja temeljne imunologije. Znanstvena aktivnost Zavoda vrlo je dobro umrežena u međunarodnu znanstvenu zajednicu s preko 20 suradničkih institucije u zemljama Evrope, Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama, Australiji i Kanadi. Nastavno tome, Zavod za histologiju i embriologiju spada u najprepoznatljivije znanstvene institucije u Hrvatskoj s obzirom na broj i razinu međunarodnih znanstvenih projekata koji se na njemu provode ili su se provodili, kao i prema broju i razini znanstvenih publikacija. Probir i edukacija mladih znanstvenika u sklopu znanstvenih projekata koji se izvode, temeljni je prioritet i Katedre i Zavoda. Većina znanstvenika i nastavnika Zavoda za svoj je rad dobila brojne međunarodne i državne nagrade. Strategija daljnjeg razvoja temelji se na dosadašnjem razvoju, što podrazumijeva aktivnosti na pribavljanju što kvalitetnijih međunarodnih i domaćih znanstvenih projekata, probir najboljih mladih znanstvenika i razvoj novih pravaca istraživanja.
